Hi Gonul,

There are still work to be done to integrate RealPlayer with Firefox so
that on clicking a .ram link, realplay would be launched; you might be
running into one of this problem area.

However, I want to check if you are able to install RealPlayer.

If you are able to install it, can you run the following command in a
terminal?

realplay
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/specials/1837_aae/rams/aae_ms_many_much_alotof_lotsof_070918.ram

Hi Gonul,

You can mark the .bin file executable and then execute it.

One way is to:
1. open up a Terminal window (from somewhere inside your KDE desktop menu),
2. Install xdg-utils needed by the installer by executing this command
(cut-and-paste then hit enter):
    sudo apt-get install xdg-utils
3. Change directory to wherever the bin file is saved with this command:
    cd Desktop
4. Mark the bin file executable with this command (change the bin file
name if necessary):
    chmod u+x realplay-10.1.0.3563-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin
5. Install as root user with this command (change the bin file name if
necessary):
    sudo ./realplay-10.1.0.3563-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin

Hopefully, I haven't left out some details.

Then, you should be able to execute the following command by
cut-and-paste into the Terminal window:
realplay
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/specials/1837_aae/rams/aae_ms_many_much_alotof_lotsof_070918.ram

If the above succeeded, you can, at least, click on the .ram link in the
web page, asked by the browser which application you want to invoke to
open the .ram file, and you should be able to type "realplay" and
execute it. (I don't think a restart of the browser, or reboot, is
necessary, but if you have problems, still, you can try that and post to
player-users mailing list again.)

Thanks.

Message-ID: <4715B9F4.1B77.004B.3@intech-solutions.com>

Greetings,

Last year there was a very grand announcement that REAL and Novell would incorporate a new Universal Player into SLED 10 which would include WMA/WMV support. It was scheduled to be released in December '06. Is there any status on this? We are a Novell Platinum Training Partner and our client base, which includes the entire NY State Education system, has listed this functionality is one of the top reasons for not implementing more SLED in the districts.

Could someone reply with some information?

Hi Bob -

Windows Media support on Linux has been available using the Helix Client
Engine since December 2006, however that is not the RealPlayer for
Linux. It is an engine that developers can use through their own UI to
play media.

The RealPlayer for Linux has been making updates and integrating Windows
Media playback since that release and has provided a beta product to
Novell that has Windows Media playback support. We will continue to
work with Novell to make this beta available to their end-users.

Thanks,
- Donya Shirzad
