If I do "realplay http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/realmedia/2004/09/graham_norton_1.ram", I get an
error dialog box that says, "Unsupported document type."
However, the contents of this page are simply:
rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/nottingham/2004/09/graham_norton_1.rm?BBC-UID=7438a7cd0074f6a59305b9864050958219dab0ff80200124e45fa93714b3e3d4_n&SSO2-UID=
If I open this location (e.g. with "realplay `cat graham_norton_1.ram`") the audio stream starts
successfully.
I would expect RealPlayer to be able to open the audio stream successfully given the http:// URL;
that's what's linked to from the BBC website I found this stream on.
This is with: RealPlayer-10.0.9.809-20070726.i586.rpm

Which Linux distribution are you using? Do you happen to be running Fedora?
I can't repro this problem using current RealPlayer 11 Gold release, and going back several releases.
If you are using Fedora, it is likely that SELINUX is causing the problem. In which case, you can
simply download the latest release, which has a workaround for SELINUX problem:

Or can you execute these command sequence:
cd /usr/local/RealPlayer/
su
chcon -t textrel_shlib_t codecs/*.so plugins/*.so

I launched realplay from the command line (bash, csh and zsh) with just one argument - the full URL
to the RAM file and I see no issues. I attempted a repro with RP10.0.9, RP11 on both Ubuntu and SLED
10 SP1 and I do not have a repro. Resolving bug as not reproducible.
Please re-open this bug with additional information (distribution details).

This is a fresh install of Fedora 9. I ran the suggested "chcon" command and the problem still
occurs. I don't see any SELinux denial messages in /var/log/messages (which is where they appeared
earlier today for a different problem).

I had downloaded RealPlayer from:

I didn't realize there was a newer RPM available; I installed RealPlayer-11.0.0.4028-20080225.i586
and tried again. The setup wizard spat out the following into my xterm:

I closed RealPlayer and tried again. This time, the player went into a bizarre loop where it would
say "Buffering - Congestion" and run from 0% to 100% very quickly, and then repeat, over and over
again, without actually playing any audio.
I still don't see any SELinux denial messages, and the files referenced in the suggested "chcon"
command don't exist.

Actually, the same thing happens if I do "realplay

on the command line.
This effect appears to be some sort of bad interaction with Fedora's sound system. If I change the
hardware interface in RealPlayer preferences from ALSA to OSS, the problem goes away, and I can use
the original http:// URL with no problems. Though of course I'd like to be able to use the ALSA
interface (which for Fedora is I think actually PulseAudio) so that RealPlayer doesn't hog the sound
card.

When playing a real-player file from a URL, Real Player randomly stops playing
back. Pushing the pause/play button re-starts the playback, but this is quite
annoying. It happens at random but very frequent intervals. The player is not
crashing; it remains running and can be resumed where it paused. I have also
let the player sit for a period of several minutes and it will sometimes
resume. The player is not buffering or otherwise bandwidth limited, it just
plain stops playing with no change to the "playing" status message. I can
provide the URL, but this may not be helpful because the URL is a subscription
site. The file being played is audio-only with no video. I have also tried
this with a downloaded MP3 file and have the same result -- If it would be
helpful, I could possibly provide the mp3 file. During my test of this file,
it paused itself at 0:21 minutes s into a 36:42 minute file the first time I
tried it. This is a new issue with OpenSUSE 11.0 -- this never occurred
during with 10.2 or 10.3. The computer is an HP/compaq:

This behavior was confirmed. The RealPlayer unexpectedly pauses to play the stream on openSUSE 11.0.
The wrapper script /usr/bin/realplay in SUSE is not producer of this behaviuor, because direct run
of RealPlayer using /usr/lib/RealPlayer10/realplay doesn't resolve this issue. The tested machine
and system is x86_64. There's no error messages from RealPlayer.

Need to remove the following known issue:
--High Definition Windows Media is not supported.
Also the system requirements need to updated under recommended requirements to reflect HD WMV
playback. As of now playback of 1080p and 720p happens smoothly on a Core 2 Duo 2GHz machine. I'll
update this bug as soon as I can get hold of a Core Duo machine.

As the person reporting the bug, I attempted to load RealPlayer 11 on OpenSUSE 11 to test your
request. I don't know if it solves the problem because it broke the ability to play real files in
FireFox. Had to reload Realplayer 10. May try again this weekend when I have the a bit more time.

I tried again with realplay-11.1.0.1108-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin and it successfully played
the stream via the ALSA interface, though it did spit out the following warnings:

With Xvideo turned on, playing back WMV3 (Windows Media Video 9) clips on RP builds with MMX support
(for WMV3) results in a tearing effect. The video frames appear out of sync and the result is not
pretty. This happens for Windows Media Video 9 clips played locally and over the network (HTTP
streams). Turning off xvideo results in expected playback without the "tearing effect".
Playing back other supported formats (Real Video, Windows Media Video 7/8) with Xvideo turned on
results in playback as expected. It appears that the recent checkin of the MMX support code has
triggered this behavior.

There is no violence observed with frames when playing back WMV9 content (non-HD) with splay (Atlas)
with UseOverlay enabled and disabled.

Great! So, it is the issue affected when PulseAudio is turned on and the nightly drop that you used
on 07/28/08 worked for you.

What about following the "instruction" setting the environment variable:
$ export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
$ /opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay
Or equivalently just this:
$ LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8 /opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay
and compare if it makes any difference for you? If there is any difference, it would be the display
of "International" characters. It is possible that no other problem will happen and we should just
silent the message at least for this case and perhaps for all cases. The warning was there to warm
against (and make troubleshooting easier) some cases where International characters support can be
broken.

This is a minor and known problem. The result is that the slider (thumb) was not shown when the
player first start, but as soon as you resize the player, or play a clip, it will be shown. Beside
the ugly error messages and the appearance when it first starts, nothing else is affected.
That was introduced by this fix:

Description: Consider a list of entries in the Playlist Editor where the last few entries in the
list are marked with an error icon. Adding more clips to the editor in such a situation leads the
Playlist Editor to incorrectly mark some of these clips with an error icon resulting in the player
skipping the incorrectly marked clips.
Repro steps:
1. Add a few supported file formats to the playlist editor
2. Add a few unsupported fileformats (.asx, .m1v) and attempt to play the first of these unsupported
entries - as expected Playlist Editor marks these entries with an error icon all the way to the last
entry
3. Now add a bunch of support fileformats (in my case, I added 10 .m4a files) and leave the editor
alone as it refreshes the list (or) attempt to playback an unsupported clip from step 2
The expected behavior is Playlist Editor should not mark the supported clips with an error icon but
it does end up marking the supported clips (.m4a) in this case with an error icon and skipping these
clips.
Attempting to play these supported clips results in expected playback (despite the error icon) -
this was done by either double clicking the "erroneous entry" or by clicking the entry and clicking
"Play". Also clicking on the error icon beside the clip title gives an error message meant for one
of the earlier unsupported clips (from step 2).

Was the erroneously-marked clip the "currently" playing clip?
This could be the issue of DTDR encountering an invalid clip but the player confused the error to be
from the currently playing clip because of a shared context between them.
I suspect that this is the known issue and you might have opened several bugs for this already. (The
bug just need to be fixed, of course...)
Also, the playlist design makes the assumption that if clips added were invalid, the user will
remove them. In particular, the design didn't attempt to make it easy to troubleshoot which are
invalid clips when clicking next and previous buttons.
