Subject: [Player-announce] Helix Player News - May 2004
Message-ID: <40A463A8.3010400@helixcommunity.org>

Hello again!
After a long hiatus in email announcements, I am back with some exciting
news.

1) RealPlayer 10 for Linux announced.
The RealPlayer 10 for Linux built on top of the Helix Player has been
announced. While the Helix Player will be a completely open source and
non proprietary player - RealPlayer adds RealAudio, RealVideo, mp3 and
other proprietary components. You can find more information about this
at the following link:
https://player.helixcommunity.org/2004/unix/helixrealfaq.html

2) Schedule.
The schedule has been updated with the new Alpha date of May 18. Our
beta is in June and Gold is in August. The schedule is available here:
https://player.helixcommunity.org/2004/schedules/
You will also find an extensive featurelist on that page for the Alpha
release.

3) Solaris, PowerPC and other platforms
The platforms page has more information about the builds for various
platforms. https://player.helixcommunity.org/platforms/
While we are on the verge of having relatively stable PPC builds, there
are some issues with the Solaris player. We would appreciate your help
in getting these fixed so that we can have an Alpha available on that
platform as well.

4) Volunteers needed
There have been several requests in our forums for a debian package of
the player on linux. While this is in plan for the future, it would be
great if debian experts among you would step up to take on this task. We
would also like some volunteers to help with our Helix online
documentation and help system. Anyone who would like to volunteer for
these tasks or contribute in any other way please feel free to email me.

Please stay tuned for an announcement when the Alpha build is posted
this monday. I look forward to your feedback and comments.

best wishes,
V

I just finished uploading the last of the various packages for the Helix
Player 1.0/RealPlayer 10 Alpha to the player downloads
 site.

The Helix Player is now 100% open source, and includes support for Ogg
Vorbis /and/ Ogg Theora, as well as SMIL 2.0 so that you can combine
Theora videos with JPEG, GIF, or PNG images and RealText. The
RealPlayer 10 alpha is a superset of the Helix Player alpha, and adds
support for RealAudio, RealVideo, MP3, and Flash.
See the release notes
 to
find out about the rest of the enhancements and give the players a
whirl. We love your feedback and comments as always, so use any avenue
you are comfortable with (forums, email, bugzilla) and let us know what
you think!

We have tried hard to get all the bad bugs out but remember that it's
alpha and constantly improving with your feedback and help.
Enjoy the player!

Hello Vikram,
The players though alpha releases seem to work quite well. I was
wondering if there might be a way to get these players linked off of real's
website? It would be easier for users not familiar with
www.helixcommunity.org a chance to download these players.

Second question totally off base. Do you know if there are plans to create
a gui such as this for producer? Not that the command line is that bad,
just when you are encodeing live streams the visual is nice.

   Thanks,
     Josh Sheedy
