New detail June 08, 2007
Attached is the ipdump. You can see that the timestamp jumps back between RDT packet 99 -> 100. where I guess rate
adaptation happened. This appears to be a server problem.

 Last changed date: 2007-06-08 16:03:39
           Version: 11.1.1.1099 (Build 100887/7529)
           Tracker: Bugs
  Target Milestone: ---
           Project: helix-server

After 2-3 seconds, the server appears to ramp down the data rate for no apparent
reason.
Comparing, in Ethereal, the difference between a success case and a failure case
for the same clip, we find "Helix Adaptation" is supported in the failure case.
After disabling Helix Adaptation, we find the problem goes away.
[Note: To disable Helix Adaptation, comment out line 1373 of
protocol/sdp/sdpmdparse.cpp "AddULONG32(pHdr, "Helix-Adaptation-Support", strtoul
(pFieldValue, 0, 10);".]

This appears to be a Helix Server rate adaptation problem.

Real Networks has a bugzilla report corresponding to this problem:
(from line 10598 of protocol/rtsp/rtspclnt.cpp)
https://bugs.helixcommunity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4989

  Target Milestone: ---

I was streaming a 2hr long 3gp clip with RDT. When the clip starts playing, if I seek to 5 or 10 or
more minutes, video is stuck, Audio keeps playing. This problem is noticed only with RDT. Same Helix
Server 11 was able to seek when streamed through RTP. Helix server 10 also has same problem.

The problem is noticed with the following clients:
Desktop RealPlayer 10.5
Symbian MicroPlayer
Windows splay.exe (Checked out Feb 06)
Symbian MMF player ( 210CayS)

One thing I noticed in the ethereal trace is that after Seek, the packet timestamps have a huge
variation when compared to playback of small clips. In the working case the packet timestamp after
seek starts around the new Seeked time. In the problem case ( long clips), the video packet
timestamp starts around the new seeked time, but audio packet timestamp is way high. This may not be
actual problem I just put it in open what I found different between working and problem logs.

I believe the RTP-Info's rtptime is not used for RDT and it is always zero in 200 OK for Play.

What could be the problem that fails all the clients ?

Subject: [Helix-server-issues] How to remove or disable rtptime in RTP-Info
	header?
Message-ID: <480868.42903.qm@web30714.mail.mud.yahoo.com>

Hello All
I have a video/audio asynchronous problem in a Helix
live stream. Actually, this stream is relayed from
Quicktime server, but somehow Helix gives me a wrong
rtptime in RTP-info header. If I remove seq and
rtptime from RTP-Info header, everything is okay. So I
just want to know if there is any parameter in
rmserver.cfg can disable or remove rtptime and seq
from header. Of course it's much better if Helix can
response a correct rtptime, but I have no idea why
helix respond an incorrect rtptime and how to correct
it.

Thank you.
Jay

When sending exclude-rules header in Helix-Adaptation from our Nokia S40 client
streaming real media file with multiple substreams, the server has the following
behavior:

- If a single rule is excluded (e.g exclud-rules =(2)), the server initially
sends some packets with the excluded rule.
- If multiple rules (e.g exclude-rules=(1,2)), the server doesn't echo the Helix-
Adaptation header.

An email correspondence with Rishi who suggested we open this bug is attached

This is most likely a bug. Can you please file a bug here:

Please send me the bug id after you have entered the bug, and I will have our
server folks take a look at it.

Thanks,
Rishi.

Hi Rishi,
I've also noticed that when we send exclud-rules with multiple rules (exclude-
rules=(1,2) ), the server does not echo back the Helix-Adaptation header. Is
this an expected behavior?

Hi Rishi,
I've attached a PCAP of an exclude-rules header scenario. I've noticed that even
when we send exclude-rules header (in this case excluding rule 2), we still
receive packets initially with asm rule 2. Do you know why that is?

Thanks,

Art,

I think there is confusion on how to use the exclude_rules header. There is an
explicit "exclude_rules" header defined for Helix Adaptation. Please refer to
following doc:
https://protocol.helixcommunity.org/2007/devdocs/sod-rtsp-adaptation-signaling-
03.txt

In SET_PARAMETER, you are seeing the client explicitly *subscribe* to the rules.
It is by no means a mechanism to exclude certain rules.

Thanks,
Rishi.

Hi Helix Community,
In the attached .pcap file, the client subscribes to ASM rules 2 and 3 for stream
id 1. Later, the ASM rules of RDT Data Packets for stream ID 1 switch to 0 and
1. The Nokia 6555 excludes ASM rules from RTSP SET_PARAMETER to avoid switching
to a sub stream for an unsupported decoder (e.g.,RA8LBR Voice). Were the ASM
rules excluded properly? If so, then why does the Helix server switch to the
excluded ASM rules?

Thank You,

The file REAL_RV9_SQCIF_FR15_BR64_RA8_ABR64.rm when it was streamed through the below mentioned
server it was not able to resume after Fast forwarding or Rewind.

Basically from ethereal logs server is not sending any UDP packets after FF/RW.

Server: Helix Mobile Server Version 10.0.5.1621 (sunos-5.8-sparc-server)

The same content was working proper when it was streamed through this Server

Server: Helix Mobile Server Version 10.1.0.793 (linux-2.2-libc6-i586-server) (RealServer compatible)

I've followed the instructions on the Helix community for setting up the building
tools and downloading the server source code on win32 platform.
In the source downloading processes, some CVS error appear:
"CVS command failed with error code 256, trying again in a few seconds" appears
from time to time.(not every time)
"CVS command failed with error code 32768, trying again in a few seconds."
appears almost every time.
What will cause these errors, how do I avoid them?

  Target Milestone: ---

Well, the summary sort of says it all. Some details:

SYSTEM_ID=win32-i386-vc7 (and my compiler is Studio .NET 2003, as specified)
Current Directory: C:\Dev\HOME\src\helix
[0] Set BIF branch (SERVER_CURRENT)
[1] Set Target(s) (servinstplus)
[2] Set Profile (helix-server-plus)
[3] run: build -trelease

-> works

Then build 241 - datatype_mp4_fileformat (and perhaps datatype_amr_fileformat) results in a
mp4fformat.dll that gets loaded properly.

The problem is, while actually trying to stream a 3GP file (both aac+mp4 and amr+h263 types are
affected), the server reports mime type: "video/X-RN-3GPP-H263" where it should be something like
"video/H263-2000". This causes many video players (quicktime, vlc) to get very confused and/or crash.

Fairly thoroughly checked this bug with Jamie Gordon on the mailinglist, and this indeed seems to be
a bug. Is the plugin being built in 'client side mode" perhaps?

When SSRA is enabled, it is observed that the timestamps in some of the RDT data
packets have a huge gap which affects the presentation dramatically.

>From a pCap log we can see the timestamps going from 2281 to 5033 while ASM rule
also changed from 1 to 2. Sometime, there are jumps within the same rule from
5033 to 10066, etc. Can you please tell us why the server behaves like this and
what should a client do to cope with this problem?

When sending exclude-rules header in Helix-Adaptation from our Nokia S40 client
streaming real media file with multiple substreams, the server has the following
behavior:

- If a single rule is excluded (e.g exclud-rules =(2)), the server initially
sends some packets with the excluded rule.
- If multiple rules (e.g exclude-rules=(1,2)), the server doesn't echo the Helix-
Adaptation header.

An email correspondence with Rishi who suggested we open this bug is attached
below:

This is most likely a bug. Can you please file a bug here:
https://bugs.helixcommunity.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=helix-server

Thanks,
-Cameron

Subject: Re: [Nokia-private-dev] Sub stream switch to unsupported decoder

Thank You,
Art <>

I've followed the instructions on the Helix community for setting up the building
tools and downloading the server source code on win32 platform.
In the source downloading processes, some CVS error appear:
"CVS command failed with error code 256, trying again in a few seconds" appears
from time to time.(not every time)
"CVS command failed with error code 32768, trying again in a few seconds."
appears almost every time.
What will cause these errors, how do I avoid them?

Well, the summary sort of says it all. Some details:

SYSTEM_ID=win32-i386-vc7 (and my compiler is Studio .NET 2003, as specified)
Current Directory: C:\Dev\HOME\src\helix
[0] Set BIF branch (SERVER_CURRENT)
[1] Set Target(s) (servinstplus)
[2] Set Profile (helix-server-plus)
[3] run: build -trelease

-> works

When sending exclude-rules header in Helix-Adaptation from our Nokia S40 client
streaming real media file with multiple substreams, the server has the following
behavior:

- If a single rule is excluded (e.g exclud-rules =(2)), the server initially
sends some packets with the excluded rule.
- If multiple rules (e.g exclude-rules=(1,2)), the server doesn't echo the Helix-
Adaptation header.

An email correspondence with Rishi who suggested we open this bug is attached
below:

This is most likely a bug. Can you please file a bug here:

Thank You,

I've followed the instructions on the Helix community for setting up the building
tools and downloading the server source code on win32 platform.
In the source downloading processes, some CVS error appear:
"CVS command failed with error code 256, trying again in a few seconds" appears
from time to time.(not every time)
"CVS command failed with error code 32768, trying again in a few seconds."
appears almost every time.
What will cause these errors, how do I avoid them?

After 2-3 seconds, the server appears to ramp down the data rate for no apparent
reason.
Comparing, in Ethereal, the difference between a success case and a failure case
for the same clip, we find "Helix Adaptation" is supported in the failure case.
After disabling Helix Adaptation, we find the problem goes away.
[Note: To disable Helix Adaptation, comment out line 1373 of
protocol/sdp/sdpmdparse.cpp "AddULONG32(pHdr, "Helix-Adaptation-Support", strtoul
(pFieldValue, 0, 10);".]

This appears to be a Helix Server rate adaptation problem.

Real Networks has a bugzilla report corresponding to this problem:
(from line 10598 of protocol/rtsp/rtspclnt.cpp)
https://bugs.helixcommunity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4989

  Target Milestone: ---

Well, the summary sort of says it all. Some details:

SYSTEM_ID=win32-i386-vc7 (and my compiler is Studio .NET 2003, as specified)
Current Directory: C:\Dev\HOME\src\helix
[0] Set BIF branch (SERVER_CURRENT)
[1] Set Target(s) (servinstplus)
[2] Set Profile (helix-server-plus)
[3] run: build -trelease

-> works

Interlinked bug #197792 has been Resolved as By Design

Per the server team:
This is caused by the the server switching to the thinning rule, and only delivering keyframes.
This is what causes the large jumps. The client needs to simply render what it can.

RAM files aren't content, only references to content. Please attach an actual 3gp file, or a
download link to one.

Sorry for the delay in response.

More info on the problem...
Initial problem was that seeking was not working on long clips. We verified with latest version of
server and seeking in general is working. But we do see video artifacts as attached on this error
report.

Rate adaptation tuned off (3gpp/Helix rate adaptation)
================================================
After a seek (say 20 min or more), playback starts from a good video frame on a high bitrate clip.
On low bit rate case, audio starts and video stalls for a while and later starts (after few
seconds)with a good video frame. NO ARTIFACTS SEEN on this case

Rate Adaptation turned on (3gpp/Helix rate adaptation)
=========================
After a seek (say 20 min or more), playback starts with artifacts(meaning new frame information
mixed with old frame info). On high bitrate clip, this artifact is seen for a smaller duration and
on low bitrate clips, the artifacts remains for a longer duration.

I understand that video freeze after seek could be because of non-arrival of key frame. But the
behaviour is different when Rate adaptation is turned on or off. Turned off case, it is fine because
the video starts with good frame(untill that audio alone is played). And when RA is turned on, video
artifacts are seen and it gives bad user experience for a longer time during playout.

Rajesh - Thanks for the additional repro information. As requested by davidg, is it possible to add
the actual 3gp file or a link to one? Unfortunately a Ram file doesn't contain the actual content
needed to reproduce the issue.
Thanks!

Version 9 of the server was built on and for a much earlier generation of Linux (RH6 IIRC). The
build triggers the warning on newer Linux systems. To make the message go away run Version 11 of
the server.
