for problem 2 looks like your public key has not been taken into account by the server, since you have a password prompt.
as written in the quickstart notes run ssh -v -v -l myusername cvs.helixcommunity.org and make sur you have no password prompt and some lines saying "server accept public key"
if it is still not the case (happened to me too), be patient or generate another key following carefully the howto, and make sure you have properly copy/paste the public key in the editkey.php page
